The children, including Sara and Andrew, go to the graveyard only to be caught by the Constable and escorted to the King House. Alec and Janet punish the children by making them clean out the barn, which turns out to be a blessing in disguise.

The children get into a hay fight and end up laughing and becoming friends in spite of their differences. While still in the barn, Olivia brings Sara a wire from her father asking her to return to Montreal. Nanny is ill and her father, still immersed in court proceedings, is uncertain how he will manage.
