Srw2024 Ing Code Using Xmodem Protocol

I recently bought a second hand Linksys SRW2024 switch through the internet. The first thing I noticed was that the webinterface didn't look as good as it did on the Linksys SRW2016 switch I already owned. After searching some on this topic I found out that it actually was a Linksys SRW2024 version 1 switch with an old firmware on it (version 1.00.86). The good news is that it is possible to upgrade this version 1 model to the same software with the same functionality as the later releases of this switch (this also works for upgrading from 1.00.69). The somewhat bad news is that upgrading the firmware is not as straight forward as you might hope or expect it to be.

Luckily, others have gone through this before and left us pointers how to get it done. Since it took me a while to gather enough hints together to get it done and find all the required files, I'll put the steps I took to get it done below and make the files available from this site. Please note that you need a null modem serial cable in order to complete this tutorial.

Xmodem Console Download Procedure Using. Specify the image file name and location and enter xmodem as the protocol. You have to download the file using xmodem.

Do not start this tutorial if you don't have a serial null modem cable or a COM port on your PC. • Download the boot code and firmware update via the following links: • You will also need a TFTP server application. I used the free Solarwinds TFTP application, but you can use any TFTP server you like. I made the Solarwinds TFTP setup available here: (7,14 MB) • Install your TFTP application and start it. Put the two files downloaded at step 1 in the TFTP root. For Solarwinds TFTP the default root folder will be C: TFTP-Root. • Navigate to the webinterface of your Linksys SRW2024 switch using Internet Explorer and log on to your device. • Via the menu navigate to Maintenance and then to File Download • Select the topmost radio button, enter the IP address to the machine on which you have installed and started the TFTP service as instructed at step 3, in the filename field enter runtop_boot-101.rfb and select Boot code in the dropdown menu.

It will take about a minute to be done. When done, you can close the popup window.

• Reboot the switch using the webinterface, telnet or serial console or by removing and returing the electricity on the device. • Next you will need HyperTerminal to connect to the console. If you're using Windows Vista/7/2008 or later, you will find that HyperTerminal has been removed from Windows. You can download and run HyperTerminal via the following download: (257 KB) Connect to your Linksys SRW2024 device using the proper COM port and the following COM port settings: • You should see an error that the SRW2024 could not start the software on it. This is normal since the version 1 firmware is no longer supported by the version 1.0.1 boot code we just loaded on the switch. It should show a message that it is going to download a new firmware using the XMODEM protocol. Right click within the HyperTerminal window and choose Send File.

Select the firmware image file ls20xx_salsa-12222.ros you downloaded at step 1. A file transfer will start and will take approximately 25 minutes to complete.

Wait for it to be done. • Once the transfer is done, the SRW2024 will start to erase its flash memory and install the new 1.22 firmware. It will reboot automatically when its done installing the software. You will be presented with the login screen again. The SRW2024 will be available on its default IP address being 192.168.1.254. The username/password will be the same as you set it to before starting this tutorial. • If you log on to the SRW2024 using the webinterface, you will be surprised with the new, much better looking, webinterface and will see the new version numbers in the System Information section.
